OFFICIAL RELEASE:
BOOTLEG RELEASES:

"METAL BLADE / METAL MASSACRE", demo;
exact date unknown, sometime around march `82

line up #2;
vocals; James Hetfield
drums; Lars Ulrich
bass; Ron Mcgovney
lead guitar; Dave Mustaine

TRACK;
  1. "hit the lights"
NOTES;

OFFICIAL RELEASE:

"MARCH `82 PRACTISE SESSION";
?/03/82, recorded in Rons garage, 13004 curtis & king road, norwalk, ca

line up #2;
vocals; James Hetfield
drums; Lars Ulrich
bass; Ron Mcgovney
lead guitar; Dave Mustaine

TRACKS;
  1. "hit the lights", (4:18)
  2. "jump in the fire", (4:23)
  3. "the mechanix", (4:32) incorrect, actually `no life `til leather` version
  4. "killing time", (2:37), sweet savage cover, re-recorded for `92 release
  5. "let it loose", (3:09), savage cover, unreleased comercially
  6. "sucking my love", (6:45), diamond head cover, unreleased commercially
  7. "am i evil?", (7:43), diamond head cover, re-recorded for `84 release
  8. "helpless", (6:12), diamond head cover, re-recorded for `87 release
  9. "the prince", (4:59), diamond head cover, re-recorded for `88 release
NOTES;
by march of `82 Metallica had their first proper line up and had started playing gigs
it is not known if these tracks are an early demo or merely a taped rehersal/practise session
of the three original tracks, both the mechanix & jump in the fire have alternative lyrics, the mechanix was re-titled "the four horsemen" & given new lyrics during the recording of "KILL `EM ALL" in mid `83
all of the cover versions are very straightforward & similar to the original versions
(running time for the tracks vary somewhat)

BOOTLEG RELEASES:

"POWER METAL" demo;
?/04/82, recorded in ron`s garage, 13004 curtis & king road, norwalk ca

line up #2 still

TRACKS;
  1. "hit the lights", (4:21)
  2. "jump in the fire", (3:56)
  3. "the mechanix", (4:50)
  4. "motorbreath", (3:26)
NOTES;
first demo recorded on half decent equipment, this demp is not actually called the power metal demo, that name comes from an early "business" card that the band used, the name has stuck this demo was originally untitled
jump in the fire & the mechanix still have different lyrics
the version of "hit the lights" on this tape is often listed as being the same take that appears on the "metal massacre" cd version (even by me originally), this is wrong

BOOTLEG RELEASES;

"NO LIFE `TIL LEATHER" demo;
?/07/82, recorded in chateau east studio, tuscin, ca

line up #4;(james now playing guitar as well as singing)
vocals & guitar; James Hetfield
drums; Lars Ulrich
bass; Ron Mcgovney *
lead guitar; Dave Mustaine

TRACKS;
  1. "hit the lights", (4:23)
  2. "jump in the fire", (3:50)
  3. "the mechanix", (4:30)
  4. "motorbreath", (3:19)
  5. "seek & destroy", (4:57)
  6. "phantom lord", (3:34)
  7. "metal militia", (5:15)
NOTES;
this was the first demo recorded on decent equipment, it was also the most widely distributed
the tracks are quite similar to the final versions on "kill `em all" apart from the lyrics for the mechanix & jump in the fire
* - Ron McGovney has stated that James played bass on one track off `no life `til leather` but didn`t mention which track

BOOTLEG RELEASES;

"WHIPLASH/NO REMORSE" demo, (also known as the megaforce demo);
16/03/83, recorded in chateau east studio, tucsin, ca

line up #5;
vocals & guitar; James Hetfield
drums; Lars Ulrich
bass; Cliff Burton
lead guitar; Dave Mustaine

TRACKS;
  1. "whiplash", (4:16)
  2. "no remorse", (5:36)
NOTES;
this was the last demo recorded before the band started work on the lp "kill `em all", the tracks don`t sound too much different to the album versions
this is also the only studio recording with Dave & Cliff playing together
many bootlegs have these tracks recorded too slow

BOOTLEG RELEASES;

"RIDE THE LIGHTNING" demo;
?/09/83, recorded in san francisco, ca

line up #6, the "classic" line up;
vocals & guitar; James Hetfield
drums; Lars Ulrich
bass; Cliff Burton
lead guitar; Kirk Hammett

TRACKS;
  1. "ride the lightning", (6:12)
  2. "creeping death", (6:34)
  3. "fight fire with fire", (4:37)
  4. "when hell freezes over", (7:16)
NOTES;
the track "when hell freezes over" is the early name for "the call of ktulu", all bootleg versions play a bit too fast. these four demos are pretty similar to the final versions

BOOTLEG RELEASES;

"MASTER OF PUPPETS" demo;
14/07/85, recorded in san francisco, ca?

line up #6 still;
vocals & guitar; James Hetfield
drums; Lars Ulrich
bass; Cliff Burton
lead guitar; Kirk Hammett

TRACKS; (all instrumentals unless noted)
  1. "disposable heroes", take 1, (6:02)
  2. "disposable heroes", take 2, (3:08)
  3. "welcome home (sanitarium)", take 1, with vocals, (3:54) incomplete
  4. "welcome home (sanitarium)", take 2, (9:34)
  5. "battery", (5:24)
  6. "master of puppets", (8:42)
NOTES;
"disposable heroes" has different lyrics. take 2 of "welcome home (sanitarium)" has an extra four minutes of music towards the end of the track, this music was replaced in the final version. the extra four minutes was expanded and reworked until it became the track ""orion", many bootlegs list this track as "orion" when it is actually half "welcome.." and half "orion"
due to this error on many bootlegs i am only listing track detail for the cd`s that i have
the track "disposable heroes" was played live six months before the release of the album

BOOTLEG RELEASES;

"HARVESTER OF SORROW" b-side demo; (fake!!)

line up #9;
vocals & guitar; James Hetfield
drums; Lars Ulrich
bass; Jason Newsted
lead guitar; Kirk Hammett

TRACK;
  1. breadfan, instrumental (budgie cover)
NOTES;
this song was listed as being a demo instrumental version but is not, the song is the commercial version with the vocals edited out almost completely, i`ve left this here as a reference only

BOOTLEG RELEASE;

"..AND JUSTICE FOR ALL" demo;
"one" recorded 2nd week of 11/87 at james`s basement, san francisco
the other tracks were recorded at one on one studio, california, starting from 29/01/88

TRACKS;
  1. "blackened", (5:50)
  2. "...and justice for all"
  3. "eye of the beholder", take 1, (6:20)
  4. "eye of the beholder", take 2, (5:55)
  5. "one", (7:03)
  6. "the shortest straw"
  7. "harvester of sorrow"
  8. "the frayed ends of sanity" instrumental, (7:24)
  9. "to live is to die"
  10. "dyers eve"
NOTES;
i don`t have all of these demos only numbers 1, 3 - 5 & 8, i don`t know the running times of the other 5 tracks or whether they are instrumentals or not
the two versions of eye of the beholder don`t sound too different, they may be the same take just different running times or cuts
